Two of the questions pharmacists hear most about zopiclone are “how quickly will it work?” and “how long will it stay in my body?” Both answers matter for using it safely — especially when it comes to next-day driving.
How quickly does zopiclone work?
Zopiclone is absorbed quickly, and most people begin to feel sleepy within around 30 minutes to an hour of taking it. That is why the standard advice is to take your tablet immediately before you get into bed — not earlier in the evening — and only on nights when you can commit to a full 7–8 hours of sleep.
How long do the effects last?
The sleep-promoting effect typically lasts around 6–8 hours, which is designed to cover a normal night’s sleep. If you take it too late at night, or sleep for fewer hours than that, you are far more likely to feel groggy and impaired the next morning.
What is zopiclone’s half-life?
A medicine’s half-life is the time it takes for the amount in your body to fall by half. Zopiclone’s half-life is roughly 5 hours in healthy adults, but it can be noticeably longer in older adults and in people with liver or kidney problems — one reason a lower 3.75 mg dose is often prescribed for these groups. As a rule of thumb, it takes about five half-lives for a medicine to leave the body almost completely, so traces of zopiclone can remain in your system for more than 24 hours after a dose.
Why does next-day drowsiness matter so much?
Because impairment can outlast the feeling of sleepiness. You may feel “fine” in the morning while your reaction times are still slowed. This has two practical consequences:
- Driving: it is illegal in England, Scotland and Wales to drive while impaired by zopiclone — see our guide to zopiclone and driving.
- Work and safety: avoid operating machinery, working at height or doing safety-critical tasks if you feel at all drowsy.
Does zopiclone show up on drug tests?
Standard workplace drug screens do not usually look for zopiclone, but specific tests can detect it. If you are prescribed zopiclone and are subject to occupational testing (for example, professional drivers), tell your occupational health team — having a valid prescription protects you.
Frequently asked questions
How long does zopiclone stay in your system?
Zopiclone’s half-life is roughly 5 hours in healthy adults, and traces can remain in the body for more than 24 hours after a dose — longer in older adults and people with liver or kidney problems.
Should I take zopiclone on an empty stomach?
Taking it with or just after a heavy meal can slow absorption and delay the effect. Taking it just before bed, not with a large meal, gives the most predictable onset.
Why do I still feel groggy the next morning?
Next-day drowsiness usually means the medicine hasn’t fully cleared — common if you took it late, slept under 7–8 hours, or need a lower dose. Don’t drive, and mention it to your prescriber.
Does zopiclone work the first night?
Yes — unlike some medicines, zopiclone works from the first dose. If it doesn’t help after a few nights, go back to your prescriber rather than increasing the dose yourself.
