Most zopiclone guidance focuses on taking the tablet. Just as important is everything around it: where it lives in your home, what happens when routines slip, and knowing what an emergency looks like. Here’s the practical checklist our pharmacists give patients.
Storing zopiclone safely
- Keep it in its original labelled packaging — the label carries your dose instructions and identifies the medicine in an emergency;
- Store out of sight and reach of children — ideally in a lockable box or high cupboard. Sedatives are among the medicines most commonly involved in accidental childhood poisoning;
- Keep it away from visitors and teenagers — sleeping tablets are also among the most commonly “borrowed” medicines in the home;
- Store below 25°C and away from bathroom humidity;
- Don’t decant tablets into unlabelled pill boxes alongside other white tablets.
Missed doses — the one rule
If you forget your dose and remember during the night, skip it. Take your next dose at the normal time the following night. Never double up, and never take a tablet in the small hours — there won’t be enough night left for it to wear off, and next-morning impairment is close to guaranteed.
Leftover tablets: return, don’t keep
When your course ends, take any remaining tablets back to a pharmacy — any pharmacy, free of charge — for safe destruction. Don’t keep them “just in case”: a drawer of leftover sedatives is a temptation during the next bad week, a hazard to others in the home, and a common route into the unplanned long-term use described in is zopiclone addictive? Never flush medicines or put them in household bins.
Sharing: never
However similar someone’s sleep problem sounds, their health isn’t yours. A tablet that’s safe for you could be dangerous for someone with sleep apnoea, liver problems or interacting medicines — checks that happened invisibly when you were prescribed it. Supplying a prescription-only controlled drug to another person is also a criminal offence.
Recognising an emergency
Call 999 immediately if someone who has taken zopiclone:
- Cannot be woken, or responds only briefly;
- Has slow, shallow, noisy or gurgling breathing;
- Has blue-tinged lips or fingertips;
- Has taken more than prescribed, or taken it with alcohol or other sedatives — even if they currently seem “just sleepy”, effects can deepen over the following hours.
Stay with them, lie them on their side, and take the medicine packaging to hospital. For anything less urgent — side effects, dose questions, worries about dependence — call NHS 111 or ask a pharmacist.

What should I do if a child swallows a zopiclone tablet?
Treat it as an emergency: call 999 or take the child to A&E immediately, even if they seem fine, and bring the packaging. Sedatives can be dangerous to children at doses far below an adult dose.
